After opening up about her ‘crippling’ anxiety and sobriety with InStyle magazine earlier this year, the supermodel-turned-actor shared a series of photos on Instagram in which she looks in good spirits.
However, the post’s caption suggests that all was not as it seemed when it came to her giddy appearance.
‘1.5 years ago the week before I changed my whole life, [sic]’ she wrote. ‘She was smiling through the pain but giving absolute spiral-sitaaaaa but she’s also giving GROWTH and I’m proud [sic].’

Article originally published on 24/01/2022: Bella Hadid is often seen starring in major fashion campaigns or strutting down the runway, but like many people, she also has to deal with challenging mental health issues.
Not shying away from sharing her personal battles, the younger sister of fellow model Gigi Hadid has shed light on her struggles with anxiety in a new interview with InStyle magazine.
Addressing the fact that her recent sobriety has helped her mental health, the 25-year-old model told the publication: ‘I have done my fair share of drinking. I loved alcohol and it got to the point where even I started to, you know, cancel nights out that I felt like I wouldn’t be able to control myself.’
Hadid, who recently co-founded a non-alcoholic drinks company, Kin Euphorics, with entrepreneur Jen Batchelor, said of the beverage they’ve created: ‘I drink this when I have crippling anxiety and I can’t leave my house or when I’m not gonna drink alcohol but still want to loosen up and be able to speak to people and socialise.’

Hadid revealed she cut out alcohol during 2021, and that this month marks her first ‘Dry January’.
Speaking about why she doesn’t see herself going back to drinking alcohol, she noted: ‘I don’t feel the need because I know how it will affect me at three in the morning when I wake up with horrible anxiety thinking about that one thing I said five years ago when I graduated high school.
‘There’s just this never-ending effect of, essentially, you know, pain and stress over those few drinks that didn’t really do much, you know?’
Earlier this month, the runway regular spoke about her ‘complicated’ anxiety and mental health struggles with WSJ Magazine.
‘I would have really depressive episodes and my mum or my doctor would ask how I was and instead of having to respond in text, I would just send them a photo,’ she recalled.
‘It was the easiest thing for me to do at the time because I was never able to explain how I was feeling. I would just be in excruciating and debilitating mental and physical pain, and I didn’t know why. That was over the past three years.’
Hadid shared her mental health issues with her Instagram followers in November last year and said at the time: ‘It was to make sure that anybody that was feeling that way knew it was OK to feel that way.
‘Even though on Instagram things look so beautiful, at the end of the day, we are all cut from the same cloth.’
In January 2021 the star also revealed that she had taken time off Instagram to focus on her health, for reasons she explained in an Instagram caption.

During her interview with WSJ, Hadid also revealed that she had stopped using a stylist, explaining: ‘It was really complicated for me to get out of the house and put an outfit together.’

The new Victoria’s Secret campaign star, who practises meditation and has switched up her routine for a healthier lifestyle, said at the time of her WSJ interview: ‘I do have good days.

‘Today is a good day. My brain fog is feeling better, I don’t feel depressed. I don’t have as much anxiety as I usually do. But tomorrow I could wake up and (be) the complete opposite. That’s why I get so overwhelmed.’

Still, she acknowledges that she’s not alone, adding: ‘Walking outside, being able to remember there are so many people going through things and have similar patterns to me, it makes me feel better.’
