Todd Snyder, FootJoy collaborate for Scottish Links-inspired collection of classically cool Looks – GolfDigest.com

Fall Golf Style
Since founding his eponymous label in 2011, Todd Snyder has created a name for himself as a classic American menswear designer, partnering with brands like Champion and Timex, and even holding leadership roles at the likes of Ralph Lauren and J. Crew. Now, he looks to take on the golf world in a new collection of stylishly nostalgic looks, called “The Links,” in partnership with FootJoy, the century-old footwear brand, that are tailor-made for the course.

The collection is rooted in deep fall and winter shades of gray with pops of navy, dark green and white inspired by vintage country club staples like leather booths, green felt and woody finishes. These motifs that have long been a familiar part of golf style for decades have also come back in trend in the fashion world as well. It’s not unusual to see saddle-style shoes or plaid pants on the runways or in luxury retail stores.
The right pieces can create on-trend looks that work both for fall golf and events off the course. The key is to find the right fit, tailor pieces to your body and coordinate colors and patterns the best you can. The Todd Snyder X FootJoy Cocktail Argyle Cashmere Cardigan (below) may seem impossible to match with, but with a thick navy lining at the buttons, arm cuffs and waist make it easier to pair with simple navy pieces. If you want to go even bolder and pair with plaid pants, keep the shirt under the sweater a simple white and opt for a more traditional white leather shoe.

In designing the collection, Snyder hoped to convey this sense of warmth and tradition so many associate with golf’s legacy. One photo in particular, taken in the 1960’s, of Arnold Palmer playing at the Old St. Andrews in a polo, trousers, and cardigan, inspired him to create his collection. The Scottish links, of course, are also where the collection gets its name from.
“He looked chic and modern,” Snyder said of the Palmer photo. “So, I started putting together a collection which took classic menswear patterns like houndstooth tweed and placed them in cutting-edge technical fabrics–a mashup of Old World style and New World functionality. These sartorial styles are perfect for the guy who wants to play deep into the fall.”

If the collection—which includes wingtip leather golf shoes, plaid trousers, and argyle sweaters—seems steeped in sentimentality, there are a few reasons for that. One, Snyder grew up around golf, and was deeply inspired by quality time on the greens spent family members.
“When I was little, I caddied for my dad and my grandpa,” Snyder said. “I never had golf shoes until I was big enough to wear my dad’s, and he wore FootJoy. So I associate them with family time and comfort. I still remember how comfortable my dad’s shoes were.”
Part of the collaborative collection, the Wing-Tip Golf Shoe comes in two simple colorways and is constructed using FJ’s innovative tech and materials, including a lightweight suede and upscale England Pebble Grain Leather. A molded EVA footbed and durable Softspikes cleats add modern performance elements to the old-school styled shoe.
